I assume you mean the Galant VR4?
Much less than the cost of buying a) the FTO, b) the Galant and c) all the work transplanting the engine. (lets not even start thinking about a 4wd conversion)
Remember, these things we love so much, cars, are a depreciating asset, you never get back what you put in. |

| Either way, you will end up spending much more on the conversion that you will be able to sell the car for (probably twice as much) |

i think he meant the current value of the half cut, not his fto after the conversion
'course you dont get money back, even tho the resale value of fto's went up a bit |

Evo III engine won't fit
And you will need to find a 6A13TT half cut. 6A12TT wont fit either. _________________ If I should die before I wake...

Hey,
I have just registered here, so G'Day from across the ditch mates...
I (just today no less) have located a 6a13TT engine for $2500 NZD and will be helping my mechanic to install it, he says something like 16 hours to fit it directly to the FTO gearbox...
Been told by so many people that it couldn't be done, but earlier last week I found an FTO GS (?, the 1800 4 banger one) at a car yard, bolted straight up...so goddam fast it was unbelievable.
I will keep everyone posted on my progress...I know it wont be straightforward, but I also know now it isn't impossible...
I CAN'T WAIT!!! |

Quick update guys...
This is the car club I am a member of, and this is my car
http://www.msport.co.nz/viewtopic.php?t=5309
Ended up trading my old GPX on this GR, the engineer of this worked on the Flying Kiwi land speed record attempt vehicle. So needless to say, this thing is built nicely |

By the way...

The actual conversion was very difficult apparently.
The yard I saw the supposed GS at (which was actually the GR you see here) told me it was a straight bolt up deal.
In all reality, it wasn't...
One of the salesmen at the yard told me he helped with the install, he was completely full of shit, said he smacked the shit outa the firewall to make rear turbo fit, in reality the rear manifold was modified (unsure what was done to it) also told me that the engine mounts lined straight up.
The engine mounts had to be modified to sit the engine lower in the bay (Still partially too high).
The gearbox is a Mitsi INVECS-II but with modified diffhead and some other internals, not too sure on the specifics. Apparently getting the 6a13TT ECU talking with the Tip' box's ECU was a nightmare, bloody glad this fella did all the hard work, because my funds would have run out and I would have ended up with a dead GPX in my garage with a half installed engine.
This car is fully certified and road legal, as for value, my old GPX was worth $10-11k (according to insurance company), a stock GR about $8k, I have this thing insured for $18k (agreed replacement value) plus wheels (excuse the front wheels, had to remove the 18's as there is no traction, and the tyres are expensive).
I am not sure what a GPX is worth in Australia at the moment, but I think you will be able to work out some sort of a correlation there in value. I would now realistically budget about $8k for the build, as I say, glad I didn't have to pay it myself...
The guy accepted my old GPX (90k on the clock, 1994 model) for this GR (63k on the clock, 1995 model, 6a13tt has only done ~20k) as a trade and $5000 cash. I got a good deal and am very happy.
If anyone is keen to do this conversion themselves, let me know, I can put you onto the guy that did the work for info (he is in Britain for a month) or I can take any photo's that you need of the engine bay or whatever. |
