Engine dies on hard acceleration occasionally

Hi, ive had my car a week (still got warranty) and twice it has died when accelerating hard. It is like misfiring and then my CAT light comes on because of unburnt fuel in my exhaust. The car wont accelerate unless i do it slowly. If I stop the car turn off the engine and then straight back on again the fault has cleared and im back to normal. There is no similarity pointing to a cause, it happened when the engine was hot both times and for no apparent reason. I have informed my warranty company but how will they find a fault that occurs twice a week?? Can anyone help. Also A/T oil is leaking out of the dipstick top. The oil level is 5mm above the last bend in the stick, I think this is overfilled can you confirm.

I thought the exhaust-shaped light showed excessive cat temperatures. You sure it's not the engine warning light?

In any case, it's probably best to arrange to give the car back to the dealer to get them to test-drive it (a lot!).

You could speed up the process by trying to get an engine ECU error code out of the car. See our very own 'Workshop' section for the relevant article...

code 24 is what came up does that make sense. Vehicle speed sensor??

Where is this sensor?

Also when pin 1 is earthed the 'N' light flashes at the same time at a frequency of 1 second .......is that correct also.it doesnt do this when ignition is on normally just when i use the diagnostic earth wire

I did a 20second re-set on the fault code and so far I amstill waiting for the fault to re-appear.

is it on the bottom left corner of your dash (the signal)?

Looks from the diagrams I've got like it's on top of the automatic transmission. Check the connections for a start.

And well done on doing the ECU error code bit. Smile Now you can take it back, tell the dealer there was an A/T fault code, tell them the sensor in question, get them to perform a double-check or service on the transmission, etc. They'll no doubt listen pretty intently once presented with that smarty-pants ECU stuff. Very Happy

No, ECU signal is top left, The CAT light is botttom left

Note that the full FTO technical manuals are available for download from:

In Part I of II 'Chassis' manual, EFI section, there is a big troubleshooting guide. It works through various (but not all) engine ECU error codes and what to do about 'em. Worth a download and a look!

I've got hard copies of these manuals - originals, actually - so if you're in Perth, feel free to get in touch for a look.
