i am recently experiencing this problem with my gear box, while in third and downshifting into second, sometimes i gets jammed somewhere in the middle and i have to clutch to get it out and try to put it back into second again, or it sometimes get caught somewhere in second but not fully locked, and crunches...

any info on this would be great, and also, any recommendations on what i should do next or where to get it fixed with approx cost would be good also..

p.s. its not a problem with my clutch as i have just replaced the clutch on the damn thing....lol

For a start, check to see if it's the same problem Mark had... gear linkage rubber joiners giving way. Check out his "how-to" and pics in this thread...

however i dun kinda get what he is saying about the gear selectors and how to fix it...i understand the problems and the symptoms, cause i had almost the same problems...

but anyone has attempted to fix this themselves? richard, have u actually done this DIY yourself? and also anyone knows about someone who had done this before, i just rather have someone that has done it before look to see if i dun do anything wrong...

it would be great if i can get some help on this, some help??

Read that article from Mark in more detail, and check out all his pictures he included. He did the entire job, and has pics of the whole fix-up job.

He repaired the part in question, but you could probably order a new bit. It's called "BRACKET, M/T GEARSHIFT CABLE". The Mitsubishi part number for the FTO, according to my CAPS program, is MD748651 or MD749667. Which one depends on your chassis number (ie. depends on date of FTO manufacture).

If you pm me your chassis number I can plug it in and tell you which.

Then, ring up Mitsubishi and check price & availability. It's FTO-specific, so they may not have it.

But first, re-read Mark's long, detailed post. Don't jump to conclusions about it being the source of the problem - check it yourself by watching the linkages as someone changes gearstick position. See if the rubber bit has in fact separated in that bracket. If it has, you're that much closer...

i attempted this myself, tonight cause i could not wait any longer...

i got to the damn thing but nothing seems to be falling apart as said in the previous post...so i guess i have to go back into investigation mode...

however the problem with the gear does not arise until it is driven and under load...usually in neutral or when the clutch is disengaged at the lights for example, the gear would slide in and out easily....

could this be a hint to another problem?

Hi Tommy.

It's a shame that didn't turn out to be the problem. Bugger! Has this all started since the sports clutch went in? Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with such things. Save for my complete lack of ability driving smoothly in a car fitted with a hardcore clutch, lol.

And sorry I couldn't talk much tonight when you rang... we had a real estate agent talking to us at that precise moment! Curse real life - it gets in the way of good, clean car-related fun!!

All I can really suggest is the places I've heard do an honest job with gearbox woes. You've talked to Mal already. The only other place that I know from a personal recommendation is:

Perth Gearbox Differential and Clutch Centre - Belmont - 9777 2344.

I mentioned on the phone about my sister-in-law's Lancer. She had the 2nd gear synchro fall apart (literally), and they did a top job fixing it, including liaising with the warranty company.

Hope this helps. I bet you're sick of taking the car places to get this gearbox problem assessed!!!

finally found out the problem, and got it fixed...now the car is running like a dream...
