Finally after 2 years, I manage to get a 1999 Reg - FTO GPX 2.0 V6 mivec auto. Very Happy
Any one getting a ticking noise when you start your car? Wonder how to get rid of that annoying noise? Appreciate any feedback. Thanks in advance.
Can I post picture on this forum Question

Good stuff.

That ticking noise is most likely the valve clearances. The GPX engine has manually adjusted valve clearances... all 24 valves need to be checked and adjusted every so often. If it's not done for a while, it starts to tick - bad ones can sound like a deisel tractor engine, hehe.

If you're in Perth, Crockenberg Motors have done this job a million times (Welshpool, 9358 0302). It's about 5 hours work. The job supposedly needs doing every 40,000km or so - or when you get sick of the tractor sound, hehe.

While you're getting work done in there, you can get other stuff attended to as well. Like checking the timing belt, drive belts, changing plugs, etc. I guess it all depends on the service history of your vehicle, and how much pampering you want to bestow up on it! Smile

Thanks Richard, actually the noise came from interior around the center console, if i turn the air-con temperature to 28+degree, the ticking noise goes away.. if not it will continue to tick for half a minute or so.
Is there a way I can disconnect the wiring or something to get rid of it? The ticking noise, sound more like "tac .." rather than "tick".. Rolling Eyes[img][/img]

Very strange. I wonder if there is a faulty valve/vent in the climate control system...

You're welcome to drop by over the long weekend, as I can have a listen, and maybe a quick poke around, and see if we can track it down.

I'll pm you...

i have recently just realised that i am experiencing this problem,

i have read in the other forums that not only does it gets rid of the noise, it will also allow the driver to feel the mivec kick in a lot better. Is that true?
true power gains in this recovery process?

and also how much is this job likely to cost at malcom crockenberg??
5hrs..? the guys in the other forums make it sound so easy its almost sounds like a DIY...

You can do it DIY if you're game. You'll need to make up a special tool to reach inside to make the adjustment.

You will have 24 valves to do. 12 in the front bank, 12 in the rear.

I've never been game to try it! I've changed hydraulic lifters on several occasions, but not manual valve clearance adjustment.

My car experiences a slight increase in torque across the entire rev range after this job is done (gets done every 30,000-40,000km). So it does feel kind of nice to drive afterwards! Very smooth... Smile

No idea about "feeling MIVEC cutover" though...

Astro,

I found it does the opposite to making you feel the mivec kick, if anything it makes the transistion smoother as the cam timing change isn't making up for lost power elsewhere.

There's something about making the 'special tool' here...

http://www.funky-fto.co.uk/index3.html

...and you can download the FTO workshop manuals from here...

Apparently, you can get the rear stuff off without needing to crack open the cooling system hoses to the intake manifold. If you're very careful.
I can't explain much more, as I've only heard it discussed... never seen it.
