I took the day off today and finally got the "digital fuel adjuster, MIVEC conversion" working. At last!
Today's changes to the circuit eventually got it switching over to the intercepted (ie. modified) signal only when MIVEC engaged.
So I could more easily see what the unit was doing, there is now a red LED on when the unit is bypassed, and a green LED when it's intercepting.
The original design used both sides of the relay to switch both input AND output signal paths from "bypass" to "interception". To make the cutover as smooth and fast as possible, I also rewired it so the input always drives the interception circuitry, and then just switched the output path. I didn't see why it needed to make harder for itself by switching both at once... especially when any cutover glitch would do Bad Things to the engine management!
So... at last... it's functioning the way I want it to. Now all it needs is tuning on a dyno! Gotta book it in. Of course, the engine may be running with absolutely perfect fuelling... in which case, I'm wasting my time! I guess I'll find out soon enough!

I never, ever want to see the inside of another DFA kit again! 
The last test drive was indeed the "last" test drive... one way or another. If it didn't work 100% perfectly that time, the box was going into my spare parts drawer - never to see the inside of an FTO again, hehe.
Fortunately (for the unit), it worked as expected. So it didn't get scrapped!!
