|

Hey all
The time has come to buy a new car!! woohooo.
I've always liked the FTO - and at the moment it's high up on my list.
So can you guy suggest round about how much I'm looking at paying for one - and what exactly am I going to get for that much!
Thanx |

Not sure how much they are going for these days... It's a little complicated, as the second hand resale value should in theory be raised a bit due to recent import restriction changes. However, not every seller will know this, so this probably won't have much real world impact.
There are plenty of 'buyers guide' sections on web pages out there - check the links from www.ftowa.com for a start.
But to summarise, you've got the following models...
GS - Puny 1.8 litre engine. Avoid. Not seen one in Perth myself.
GR - 2.0 litre engine, no variable valve timing (but don't hold that against it - solid performer)
GPX - 2.0 litre engine with MIVEC variable valve timing & lift.
GP version R - Like a GPX, but a little "stripped" in the cabin options for weight savings. Firmer suspension too, I think.
Then there's the decision between 5sp manual and the auto/tiptronic gearbox (the same one now used in the local Magna "sports" version cars)... except older FTOs have a 4sp tip box, and newer ones - post 1997 I think - have 5sp box.
The pre/post-1997 also sees the following notable changes:
- Pre-97 FTOs have ABS as an option - pretty rare too. Post-97 has ABS as standard.
- Pre-97 FTOs have the oval "classic" look nose. Newer ones have a square grille bit, and the fog/indicators are separate, circular moulds instead of the larger, oval "double" lights in the old one.
If you're buying off a dealer, expect there to be pre-existing accident damage. If they say it's a perfectly straight, never-bent-in-Japan example, congratulate them on being such a great importer! Then get it checked by RAC anyway, because they are probably fibbing.
Historically, they made more mark-up by buying 0-grade pranged examples, then fixing them up for Oz sale. Mine's like that... but it drove perfectly straight and was mech A1. Had it 3 years, used it hard and had no trouble at all.
Hope this helps!

Forgot to say...
If you're unsure as to whether the GPX you're offered is REALLY a GPX, or is a GR with GPX and MIVEC stickers...
- GPX 2.0 litre engine has oil filler on the left. GR has it on the right.
- When you flat-tack accelerate in a GPX, the engine sound will change substantially as you pass 5400rpm. This is the fun MIVEC stuff kicking in. Keeps that torque curve nice and usable right up to 8000rpm redline.
If the car makes random knocking noises from the suspension, it'll be worn anti-roll-bar bushes, droplinks, whatever. They wear out - especially seeing as the oldest models are now 9 years old.
Just drive a few... Good fun, that car shopping!

Hi all,
Many of you may have noted my lack of participation in events recently, the reason - pregnant wife and time to let go of the FTO .
If any of you guys know of any buyers please forward my details to them. I have a new mobile phone number of 0423 040 510.
email:[email protected]
ss1 - if you are in Perth, I will do you a good deal on the FTO as I need to downgrade to a family car.
Perhaps I can catch up with a few of you before the car goes.
Cheers,
Dave W |

Aaron's car has been sold...to me...Hence I have joined the group _________________ Ecclesiastes 1:1-2
